The Society of Medical Students of Thailand (SMST), under the patronage of His Majesty the King, utilized the Virtual Space platform powered by SPOT from True VWORLD to organize an online event aimed at enhancing the skill set of medical students throughout Thailand. This platform offers exceptional features that enable participants to create their avatars, decorate their workspace, communicate with others, and share their screen in real-time using their camera.

Challenges:
The Society of Medical Students of Thailand (SMST) under the patronage of His Majesty the King decided to organize an online event to develop skills for medical students across the country with no restrictions on locations. The team was looking for a solution that included features that would allow participants to communicate with each other just like in a physical seminar. In the past year, they had organized online activities during the pandemic but encountered a problem the participants left the video open but did not really participate in the online event. Therefore, the team has organized the seminar as parallel sessions at the same time. The chosen platform must also be able to meet this issue.
Solution:
The Virtual Space powered by SPOT, supported by True VWorld, was chosen as the primary event space for the seminars, allowing participants to actively engage with each other.

Founded in 1991 under the patronage of His Majesty the King, the Society of Medical Students of Thailand (SMST) aims to serve as a hub for cultivating and harnessing the potential of medical students. As all medical students and military medical students in Thailand are included as members, membership is automatic.
From Saturday, January 14 to February 19, 2023, the SMST arranged an online workshop centered around the theme of “SMST Research Workshop & Pitching: Elderly Care”. The objective of this workshop was to inspire medical students to learn about and address issues in elderly healthcare. In addition, the workshop aimed to enhance the students’ research abilities and project-thinking skills to tackle present and future challenges.
The inaugural event of the year 2023, ‘SMST Research Workshop & Pitching: Elderly Care’, aims to develop research and project-thinking skills in addition to promoting healthcare concepts that address issues in Thailand. This academic year, the primary focus is on elderly healthcare in Thailand. The workshop targets high school students, medical students, and other individuals from various disciplines who are interested in tackling issues related to aging health. They have received an overwhelming response, with 217 individuals expressing interest in registering for the event.
To achieve the goal of enhancing the skills of medical students throughout Thailand, the SMST team made the decision to host this online event. By doing so, participants are able to join regardless of their location, ensuring maximum accessibility.
Selecting the appropriate platform that meets the event requirements is crucial. The platform should have the capability to accommodate up to 300 attendees, as well as several speakers and team members.
The team sought a platform with features that facilitate communication between participants and enable access to content comparable to in-person events. They had experienced issues in the past with participants leaving the video open due to boredom with traditional event formats. Additionally, the seminar was organized as parallel sessions or multiple stages occurring simultaneously, so the chosen platform had to accommodate this format.
The team aimed to improve the online event experience by enabling participants to observe events occurring in other rooms simultaneously. This way, they can select a room to join and engage in activities at their discretion at any time. Additionally, being able to monitor events in other rooms should help keep attendees attentive.
True VWORLD has provided support for the Virtual Space, which is powered by SPOT, to serve as the primary venue for the event. This platform has been selected to facilitate seminars, workshops, and idea-sharing among participants in a seamless and effective manner. A key feature of this platform is the ability for attendees to customize their avatars and workspaces, as well as to communicate with others, turn on their cameras, and share screens in real-time, all of which meet the needs for learning and creative thinking.
“SPOT offers the advantage of a Grid View mode that mimics an online meeting system, making screen sharing a breeze. Familiarity with common online meeting platforms means speakers can use it with minimal preparation. If the speaker or team wishes to use additional features like timekeeping, voting, or icebreaking with emoji, the organizers provide a brief training session beforehand. “Using the platform was a great experience for me. I found it exhilarating, and navigating it was like playing a game. Despite being my first time using it, it only took a few minutes to become accustomed to the platform. I was able to make new friends and get a glimpse of their personalities through their avatars and the emojis they used to react. Some participants even left the main event to chat in other rooms or explore various items and activities within the virtual space.” Metasit Tansiri (Puh), a medical student who participated in the activity.
